Ex-Gilas coach Toroman now with Jordan team
Former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Rajko Toroman
MANILA, Philippines – The basketball journey of former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Rajko Toroman continues as he has officially taken over the head coaching post of Al Nashama, the national basketball team of Jordan.
Toroman took over the Philippine national basketball team in 2009 and was instrumental in developing the squad, which culminated in a second-place finish at the FIBA Asia Championship in Manila last year.
Toroman was also responsible for leading Iran to its first ever gold medal in the 24th FIBA Asia Championship in 2007.
“It’s a big challenge for me, after Iran and the Philippines, to have the opportunity to coach one of the best teams in Asia,” Toroman said in an interview with the FIBA Asia website.
“I’ll try to do the same as what I did with those teams. That is, taking Jordan forward,” he said.
Toroman has already started holding practice sessions at the Prince Hamzah courts in Amman.
He revealed that his immediate target for the Jordan national team is the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, but their long-term target is the FIBA Asia Championship in 2015.
Former national team stalwarts Sam Daghles and Zaid Abbas “will play in the Asian Games for sure,” Toroman said.
“Sam will even play in the 14th WABA Championship. Abbas is working hard in his rehab,” he added.
Toroman is also hoping to develop some of the younger Jordanian players.
“It is not just about the result. It will also be about developing some of the young players. The team will be a mix of experienced and young players,” he said. “I don’t yet have an opinion about the younger players, because I’ve had just two practices, but I’m very optimistic.”
