MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Azkals head coach Thomas Dooley saw some progress in the national team after they held a training camp in Qatar last week.
The Azkals saw action twice in Qatar, beating Nepal 3-0 in a FIFA international friendly on April 12 before settling for a 1-1 draw with Al Ahli SC on April 14.
“We got a little closer again,” Dooley told the team website. “We learned that we can also play more aggressive forward.”
“(We learned) that we can dictate the game, than we can create chances, and we can score goals,” he added.
Curt Dizon, Martin Steuble, and Ruben Doctora all found the back of the net against Nepal, while Juani Guirado scored against Al-Ahli before the club equalized.
Dooley, however, stressed that the match against Al Ahli was meant for “trying something out, and the result is secondary.”
“These games are big for the players who are, most of the time, on the bench,” Dooley said. “(These games let them) get game time and prove to the coaches that they should be considered.”
Both matches were geared towards preparing the Azkals for the AFC Challenge Cup in May.
