MANILA, Philippines – Defending Commissioners Cup champions Alaska Aces gun for a sixth straight victory when they kick off their best-of-three quarterfinals series against the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers Monday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Alaska has won five straight games, including an 85-66 mauling of San Mig in a non-bearing game to end their elimination round campaign, a contest that saw the Mixers rest their key players.

The Mixers – seeking a third consecutive conference crown – have lost three consecutive contests heading into the quarter-finals.

“Our preparation for Game 1 will be very limited,” San Mig head coach Tim Cone previously admitted, noting that the schedule kept teams from knowing who they will play until the last day of the elimination round. []

“You do what you have to do in these kinds of situations. A schedule likes this makes it very difficult for coaches,” he said.

Alaska, meanwhile, is expecting to have a more difficult time in Monday’s game.

“They will be different with (James) Mays, (James) Yap and (Marc) Pingris there,” Alaska coach Luigi Trillo said. “They will be twice as sharp and as good.”

Game time is at 8 p.m.
