MANILA – Filipino boxer Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista lost via a split decision to his Mexican challenger Jose “Negro” Ramirez in the main event of Pinoy Pride XIX on Saturday night, extending the country’s losing streak in the international arena.
Two of the judges saw it 114-111 for Ramirez while one scored it 114-111 for Bautista, thereby awarding the WBO international featherweight title to the visiting Mexican.
Ramirez immediately caught Bautista with a left cross to the face in the first round, sending the 26-year-old Boholano to the canvass.
Bautista survived but was already suffering a facial cut by the end of the third round.
“Boom Boom” went down again in the fifth after being clipped with an uppercut, but it was ruled as a slip.
Ramirez, who also sustained cuts on both eyes, was knocked down twice in the following rounds. Both knockdowns, however, were also ruled as slips.
In the ninth round, the Mexican was caught throwing an elbow which caused a cut near Bautista’s left ear. Referee Bruce McTavish penalized Ramirez.
But the damage was already done and Bautista was forced into survival mode for the rest of the fight.
Buatista’s loss followed the title defeats of Nonito Donaire Jr. and Brian Viloria.
Donaire recently suffered a unanimous decision loss to Guillemro Rigondeaux, and Viloria absorbed a split decision defeat to Juan Francisco Estrada.
In the undercard of Pinoy Pride XIX, Arthur Villanueva won over fellow Filipino Marco Demecillo via unanimous decision.
Rocky Fuentes also beat Mexico’s Juan Kantun by points.
Pinoy Pride XIX will be aired on Sunday starting 10:15 a.m. on ABS-CBN Channel 2.
