MANILA, Philippines – University of Mindanao-Tagum (UMT) spikers walloped the opposition to enter the quarterfinals of the 15th Nestea Beach Volley National Championships in Boracay.

The UMT’s men’s and women’s teams were able to reach the quarterfinals after turning back University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and De La Salle University (DLSU).

UMT men’s pair of Daryl Kim Lapiz and Jefty Amora overcame a sluggish start to beat USJ-R bets Jade Illut and Jason Uy, 13-21, 21-16, 15-11.

“We’re still adjusting to the sun’s heat along with the blow of the wind,” said 20-year-old Amora, who recently finished his four-year Criminology degree. “We tightened up our floor defense and delivered our service well. That proved to be the key.”

In the distaff side, Lourdilyn Catubag and Karen Kay Quilario of UMT humbled DLSU’s Jeushl Wensh Tiu and Kim Fajardo, 21-10, 21-10.

The event offers a top purse of P100,000 for eventual winners in both categories.

Joining UMT in the men’s last 8 were Arellano University, Far Eastern University and Holy Cross Davao College while University of Santo Tomas and Central Philippines University also booked their quarterfinals slots in the women’s event.
