MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Richard Abril, who nearly defeated Brandon Rios over the weekend, is amenable to fighting unbeaten Filipino lightweight Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta.
Abril, who diffused the aggressive Rios, said he has no problem dealing with a lefty like Gesta.
“I don’t worry about that,” Abril said in Boxing Scene. “Because that’s the same thing they said about [Brandon Rios] and I fought him all the way. No matter what the judges say, I’m sure I won the fight.”
Gesta fought in the undercard of the Rios-Abril card and defeated Colombia’s Oscar Cuero in eight rounds.
The undefeated lightweight knocked down the Colombian with a strong body shot in the seventh round, and again with a right hook to the head in the eighth.
But Abril said he is not intimidated.
“For me, there’s no worries. Because when I’m in the ring, I go to win all day and all night. I’m going to do what I have to do in order to win,” he said.
Abril nearly won against Rios, but had to settle for a split decision loss.
Gesta, meanwhile, is also being considered as among the candidates for the Juan Manuel Marquez fight in July.
Top Rank Promotion’s Bob Arum said other boxers being considered aside from Gesta are Rios and Mike Alvarado.
