MANILA, Philippines -- With the rise of the Philippine Azkals, football has also been gaining popularity in the country.
Which is why football clinics and schools have started leveling up, bringing in international coaches from prestigious European teams.
The YKK Just for Kicks Football clinic brought in coaches from Real Madrid Club de Futbol of Spain to help football camps for nearly 300 kids over the weekend.
“It’s a great opportunity to come here and teach this beautiful game to these kids in the Philippines. It’s important to teach them the right basics as early as possible and to make the game fun for them,” said coach Jaime Torcal Cano of Real Madrid
Also in the country are coaches from the Chelsea football club, the team of Phil and James Younghusband of the Azkals when they were growing up in England.
The Chelsea soccer school is partnering with the Younghusbands’ Football Academy.
“Masaya kami that our old team back in London has sent their support to help our kababayans. This is a big boost for Philippine football,” said Phil.
“We're very excited to be able to teach the kids the European style of football the way we grew up learning and loving the sport,” said James.
The Chelsea soccer school powered by the Younghusband Football Academy will begin on May 15 and is open to kids 16 years and below.
