MANILA, Philippines – Former De La Salle University star Ricci Rivero has yet to choose a new school, after he confirmed his exit from the university two weeks ago.
Rivero, a member of the UAAP Season 80 Mythical Team, has had a tumultuous offseason, beginning in February when it was revealed that he had been taken off the Green Archers together with older brother Prince and unheralded teammate Brent Paraiso.
The school announced that the three players had taken a "leave of absence" from the team, but on April 4, Rivero made it official that he was leaving La Salle.
Rivero was immediately linked to a move to University of Santo Tomas, which would reunite him with former La Salle coach Aldin Ayo. However, the athletic swingman made it clear that he has yet to decide on where to take his talents next.
"Siguro, by August, meron na," said Rivero.
"As of now, sa akin, ayaw ko kasi to talk to them," he added. "Not really sa ayaw ko, but I just want to focus on myself and Gilas (Pilipinas)."
"Kinakausap nila 'yung dad ko, and then as of now lang, I don't want to commit myself."
Rivero said he is open to any school, but he will likely prioritize those that feature a system that fits his skill set.
"I'm looking forward to seeing a university which is 'yung mafi-fit ako sa system," he explained. "Kasi, kahit gusto ko dito sa school na ito, if hindi naman ako fit sa system, if mayroon na silang players na 'yung nasa position ko, parang hindi rin magma-matter."
Rivero averaged 14.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.7 steals for the Green Archers in Season 80, in what was only his second year in the UAAP senior's division.
