MANILA, Philippines – Former two-time PBA Best Import Gabe Freeman is set to replace Josh Powell as the reinforcement of the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

PBA.ph reported on Monday that Ginebra had released Powell after the former Los Angeles Laker was called up by the Houston Rockets, who offered him a contract.

“Sinabi niya nakatanggap siya ng call sa Houston kaninang umaga,” Ginebra governor Robert Non said. “Eh sinabi niya, kapag nag-sign up siya, pwede maging eligible na siya sa NBA pension.”

“Kaya hindi na namin siya pinigilan,” Non said.

Ginebra management has already provided Freeman with a plane ticket, who is set to arrive in Manila on Wednesday from the United States.

Freeman will still have to renew his license with the Games and Amusement Board in order to be eligible to play in Ginebra’s final game of the elimination round against Rain or Shine.

Ginebra has already clinched a place in the quarter-finals but is working to avoid finishing in the seventh or eighth slots, which would mean a twice-to-beat disadvantage in the first round of the playoffs.

PBA.ph reported that Ginebra also considered former import Dior Lowhorn, former Memphis Grizzlies forward Andre Emmett, and Arkansas player Charles Thomas before choosing Freeman.
