MANILA, Philippines – Filipino fighter Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta knocked out Mexicos’ Edgar “Basuras” Riovalle in the eighth round of their lightweight showdown last Friday in Del Mar, California (Saturday in Manila).

It was Gesta’s first fight in 16 months, having last fought in December 2012 when he was unanimously outpointed by IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez in what was his first professional loss.

Gesta won by knockout at the 0:47 mark of the eighth round, hiking his ring record to 27-1-1 with 15 wins by knockout.

“I’m happy with my performance. I wanted to get the victory by any means, and I took him out of there,”Gesta said in a statement released to RingTV. []

“I was a little rusty, but I shook that rust off last night. I know if I continue to work hard, I’ll get back on top,” he added. “My goal is to work my way back into another world title shot.”

Riovalle’s record dropped to 37-18-2. It was his fourth loss in his last five fights.
