MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle and Ateneo posted separate victories as they kicked off their respective campaigns in the 2013 FilOil Flying V Hanes Preseason Cup.

The Archers pulled off a come-from-behind win against PCCL champion University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 73-67, by wiping out a 51-57 deficit.

Jason Perkins led the way for La Salle with a double-double effort of 17 points and 13 rebounds.

After being tied up with a halftime deadlock, 34-all, the Jeric Teng-led Tigers secured a six-point advantage going into the fourth.

UST had to bleed for points in the final period, especially when La Salle unreeled a 13-2 run in the last three minutes.

Teng scored a game high of 31 points, while Aljon Mariano had 28.

But the Archers’ balanced scoring sent the Tigers tumbling down.

Gabby Reyes scored 13, while Jeron Teng and Almond Vosotros each added 10 points.

Meanwhile, UAAP champions Ateneo Blue Eagles weathered the offensive might of the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras for a 77-72 win.

The Cobras, Filoil visitors from CESAFI, took advantage of the Eagles’ slow start for a 16-10 lead.

Ateneo later found its groove as Kiefer Ravena played in tandem with Chris Newsome for an alley-oop. This pushed the Eagles ahead, 32-29, going into the fourth quarter.

SWU fought back to cut the deficit to 74-70.

But the Eagles were able to hold off the Cobras, as Ravena sealed the win on the free throw line.
