MANILA, Philippines – Derrick Pumaren has officially taken over as the head coach of the University of the East Red Warriors, effective Thursday.
Pumaren, who played for the university in the late 1970s, was called a “true” Red Warrior by a UE official as he takes over a promising squad that nevertheless failed to make it to the Final Four in the previous UAAP season.
Pumaren replaces Boycie Zamar, who was given the boot last April 1.
UE said they want a head coach “who will handle the team full-time, one without commitments to other teams.”
Pumaren previously served as the UE team consultant from Seasons 68 to 71, when his younger brother, Dindo, was coaching the Red Warriors.
He has also coached the De La Salle Green Archers in the UAAP, as well as various teams in the Philippine Basketball Association.
