FilOil unveils new tournament format

MANILA, Philippines – The Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup is making a change to its format to accommodate the 21 teams participating in the men’s division this year, following the inclusion of five new provincial teams.  

The men’s tournament will now feature three groups, with the teams playing other teams from their group in a single-elimination round. 

The top two teams of each group, along with the two best third placers on quotient will then advance to the knock-off quarter-finals. 

Once in the quarter-finals, the teams will be ranked from first to eighth based on their win-loss record and the quotient system. Teams will play based on the following: 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5.

In the semi-finals, it will be the winner of 1 vs. 8 against the winner of 4 vs. 5; and the winner of 2 vs. 7 against the winner of 3 vs. 6. The winners advance to the championship game.

Here are the groups in the men’s division:

Group A: Colegio De San Juan De Letran, De La Salle University, San Beda College, Southwestern University (Cebu), University of the East, University of San Carlos (Cebu), University of the Visayas (Cebu).

Group B: Emilio Aguinaldo College, Far Eastern University, Lyceum University of the Philippines, Mapua Institute of Technology, RP Youth U18, St. Clare College, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta.

Group C: Centro Escolar University, College of St. Benilde, Holy Trinity College (General Santos), Jose Rizal University, National University, San Sebastian College Recoletos, University of the Philippines.

In the women’s division, 10 participating teams are divided into two brackets. The top two teams of each group will go to the knockout crossover semi-finals, where A1 will play B2, while A2 will play B1.

The winners advance to the single-game championship match.

Here are the groups in the women’s division:

Group A: Adamson University, Centro Escolar University, De La Salle University, Rizal Technological University, University of Santo Tomas.

Group B: College of St. Benilde, Far Eastern University, National University, University of the East, University of the Philippines.

In the juniors division, the 12 teams have been divided into two groups. As in the women’s division, the top two teams of each group will go to a knockout crossover semifinals.

Here are the groups in the juniors division:

Group A: Far Eastern University, Jose Rizal University, La Salle Greenhills, National University, San Sebastian College Recoletos, University of Santo Tomas.

Group B: Ateneo De Manila High School, Colegio De San Juan De Letran, De La Salle Zobel, Mapua Institute of Technology, San Beda College, University of the East.
