Chiang Kai Shek battles UST in Fr. Martin opener

MANILA, Philippines – Reigning Tiong Lian tournament champions Chiang Kai Shek Blazing Dragons will test their mettle against UAAP’s University of Sto. Tomas Tiger Cubs in the opening day of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup Sunday at the Dom Placid gym in the San Beda College campus.

The Blazing Dragons will feature the members of the team that led them to the Tiong Lian crown against the Tiger Cubs in the juniors division.

Finals MVP John Kevin Baytan, point guard Carlo Young and 6-foot-6 slotman Wilson Bartolome will spearhead Chiang Kai Shek’s charge.

The three players were part of a 13-man Tiong Lian All-Star selection which recently went to Taiwan for a series of exhibition games.

Meanwhile, the Adamson Baby Falcons will clash with the National College of Business and Arts Junior Wildcats in the first game at 9 a.m., while the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Light Bombers tackle the Jesus is Lord Christian Foundation cagers at 10:30 am.

In the women’s division, the Ateneo Lady Eagles will play the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix at 1:30, while the Lyceum Philippine University Lady Pirates take on the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws at 3 p.m.

A total of 40 school teams are taking part in this three-month long cagefest, including 16 collegiate men’s teams, 18 high school boys squads and six women’s teams.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles and Blue Eaglets are also participating, along with the NCAA juniors champions San Beda. De la Salle University, Far Eastern University, Adamson and the University of the East are also participating.

NCAA campaigners Letran, Perpetual Help and JRU are also included in the tournament.
