MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine girls team settled for a second-place finish in the 2014 Street Child World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, bowing to Brazil, 1-0, in a tense final.

The hosts took the lead when Thayane scored the lone goal of the match in the second half, although the Filipinas had some chances, including a strike that went straight to the Brazilian goalkeeper.

The Brazilians were able to hold firm, however, and clinched the title amid a carnival-like atmosphere inside the arena.

“It’s been great for the girls on and off the pitch,” Philippine head coach and team leader Roy Moore said in an interview with the tournament website. “They’ve had experiences they will keep forever, and will use to help them make their next steps in life.”

“They really put their all into the game, and were very upset to lose, but once they’ve recovered, they’ll be able to look back on great memories,” he added.

The Filipinas qualified for the final after beating Mozambique, 1-0, in the semis.
