MANILA, Philippines – Gary David is relishing his first-ever PBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award after leading the Philippine national team to a 101-93 win over the PBA All-Stars yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
David scored 15 points in just 20 minutes to lead Gilas Pilipinas in what amounted to be their first tune-up game ahead of the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games later this year.
“Masaya na first time ko mag-MVP sa All-Star,” David told PBA.ph after the festivities.
David also sees the win as a good sign as the national team continues to prepare for the Spain tournament.
“Magandang panimula sa amin ito,” he said.
Sunday’s game could not be more different from the meeting between Gilas and the PBA All-Stars in 2013. Last year, the Nationals needed a last-second Jeff Chan triple to salvage a 124-all draw.
But this time, Gilas won convincingly, with David catching fire midway in the final period to help the national team build a 95-77 lead.
David wound up sitting out the last four minutes of the contest as his teammates ably held off the All-Stars.
