The Philippines national tennis team is a win away from taking their Davis Cup tie with Pakistan with two big victories Friday at the Philippine Columbian in Manila.

PJ Tierro and Ruben Gonzales survived tough battles vs their Pakistani opponents to take the first two points in a race to three.

Tierro swept Pakistan's top single's player Aqeel Khan in straight sets but he had to work hard for it, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. In the second match, Gonzales scored an equally hard-earned win, beating Samir Ifthikar 6-4, 6-3, and 6-1.

With the two wins, the Philippines can clinch the tie on Saturday if the doubles combo of Treat Huey and Johnny Arcilla can get past Aisam Qureshi and Aqeel Khan in the doubles match.

It will showcase world-class quality doubles as Huey is ranked 20th in the world, while Qureshi is ranked 16th in the world.
