MANILA, Philippines – Despite Guillermo Rigondeaux’s talent, HBO commentator Jim Lampley believes Nonito Donaire Jr. can edge the hard-punching Cuban through his ring experience.
“There's a tremendous challenge to Donaire in this fight. They're both classic counter punchers, and neither really wants to take the lead,” Lampley said in David Greisman’s Boxing Scene report.
“[But] I have to go with Donaire: greater experience and flexibility.”
Donaire will be staking his WBO super bantamweight crown for Rigondeaux’s WBA strap on April 13 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Noting that Donaire is the more popular fighter, Lampley said the “Filipino Flash” would have to take the lead against Rigondeaux.
“The person who is selling tickets, and whose reputation is on the line is Donaire. So, Donaire will have to lead,” said the commentator. “He has no choice other than to vary his natural style. Rigondeaux will be willing to stand back and wait for Donaire to lead. That's a big risk, but I think Donaire is good enough to manage that risk and win the fight.”
