MANILA, Philippines – New Barangay Ginebra import Josh Powell plans to emulate Kobe Bryant’s “kill mentality” when he debuts for the Gin Kings on Wednesday.

Powell is a two-time NBA champion, having been part of the LA Lakers that won back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.

There, he became teammates with the Lakers superstar from whom he picked up the mindset of going for “the kill.”

“That‘s one of the reasons why me and him (Bryant) go along so well. I have a certain mentality that’s the same as his, go out there and just kill,” he said in Richard Dy’s report to

Powell said he knows Ginebra fans would like the Gin Kings to bring back their “never-say-die” spirit which has recently been dampened by a string of defeats in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

He hopes to contribute and bring the team’s edge back.

“At the end of the day, you know the fans are obviously passionate about this team, but with just a kill mentality. That‘s it, point blank period,” Powell said.

Powell will be colliding against fellow NBA veteran Darnell Jackson who was brought in by the Meralco Bolts for the Ginebra game on Wednesday.

Jackson will serve as a temporary replacement of Meralco import Brian Butch, who was recently downed by sickness.

The Ginebra-Meralco clash will start at 8 p.m. with the Bolts aiming to raise its win-loss record to 4-3 and Ginebra hoping to improve to 3-4.
