LOS ANGELES, California – Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez is ready to compete after taking a month and a half off.
In his first competition since the Sochi Winter Olympics, Martinez is set to participate at the Triglav Trophy competition in Slovenia.
“Excited akong mag-compete again despite ang mga injuries ko,” said Martinez. “I’m really happy and excited to compete again.”
After an early morning practice session, Martinez, his mother Teresa, and his coach Ted Domingo left Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
Martinez had opted to sit out the Junior World Championships earlier this month due to some pre-existing injuries, but received his medical clearance to compete last week.
“I’m still not 100 percent dahil meron pa rin akong lower back pain a little bit sa right knee,” said Martinez. “Pero manageable.”
Martinez will compete on April 4 and 6, and will be the youngest skater among the nine countries represented in Slovenia.
“Iniisip ko lang ang sarili ko. Iniisip ko lang yung program ko na gagawin ko sa competition,” said the Olympian.
After Slovenia, Martinez will make a quick trip back to the United States before he returns home to the Philippines later in April for the offseason.
