MANILA, Philippines – A total of 27 collegiate and high school squads will see action in the 20th Fr. Martin Summer Cup starting Saturday.
Commissioner Robert dela Rosa bared that 16 collegiate men’s teams and the national youth under-17 team are listed in the senior’s division, while 10 high school boys team will be participating in the tournament.
The competition gets under way at the St. Placid gymnasium in the San Beda College campus in Mendiola this Saturday.
Two collegiate finalists – the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and the St. Clare Saints – are among those which have signified their intention to join the tournament.
The Growling Tigers and the Saints will be in the company of the Ateneo-B Blue Eagles, the RP Youth U-17 team, Faith-Batangas, Centro Escolar University-Malolos, Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Also participating in the tournament are: Far Eastern University, Lyceum Philippines University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, San Sebastian College-A, San Sebastian College-B, San Beda College and Metropolitan College.
The defending champions San Beda Red Cubs and UAAP champions National University (NU) headline the junior division, while Lyceum-A, Lyceum-B, San Sebastian-A, EAC-ICA, UST, Chiang Kai Shek Dragons, Adamson and San Sebastian-B will also compete.
The Growling Tigers are expected to plunge into action with Segundo “Bong” dela Cruz debuting as their coach in their bid to prepare for action in the coming 77th season of the UAAP.
Last year, the NU Bulldogs defeated the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 63-47, for the senior crown, while the San Beda Red Cubs defeated the Letran Squires, 72-63, to retain the junior crown.
