MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Freddie Roach said he has had discussions with Manny Pacquiao about the latter’s retirement plans.

Roach, who has been training Pacquiao for more than a decade, said the Filipino boxer once consulted him about leaving the sport.

“Manny’s asked me ‘When I start showing signs of slippage and I need to retire, will you tell me?’” Roach said in Boxing Scene.

“I said ‘I’ll be the first one to tell you Manny’ and I said ‘When I tell you, will you retire?’ and he said ‘Of course I will’. Because most guys won’t,” he added.

Pacquiao recently claimed that he has renewed his faith and might no longer fight beyond 2012.

The Filipino superstar has a June 9 title fight against Timothy Bradley. He may also shoot for a highly lucrative fight against fellow pound-for-pound best Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But Roach said Pacquiao has already achieved so much in boxing.

“We have a good relationship and I know he’s coming close to the end of his career.”
