MANILA, Philippines – Mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Alexander "The Mauler" Gustafsson hopes UFC light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones will be able to beat heavy-hander striker Glover Teixeira in UFC 172.

Gustaffson said that if there’s anyone that should beat Jones, it would be him.

"I want him to beat Glover Teixeira, because I want to take the belt from Jon Jones," the former light heavyweight challenger told BT Sport.

Jones appeared to be the most dominant light heavyweight champion in UFC history until he fought Gustafsson in UFC 165 last September.

The 6'5" Swede took down Jones for the first time in his career, picking him apart on the feet and cutting the champion badly above the right eye early in the fight. Gustafsson, however, lost a very close unanimous decision.

Gustafsson said he understands the reason Jones declined an immediate rematch.

"If I look at Jones' perspective I don't think that's strange, because he tries to avoid me… Everyone can see that. I can see that. He does what it takes to not fight me. For myself, it doesn't make any sense,” he said.

Gustafsson hopes he could get another shot at Jones after the latter defends his title against Teixeira on April 26.
