MANILA – The Philippines’ Patrick John Tierro pulled off an upset against fourth-seed player Roberto Ortega Olmedo of Spain in the quarterfinals of the Olivares Cup-Philippine International Tennis tournament on Friday.
Tierro, a wild card entry to the tournament, won 6-1, 6-7 and 7-6 against the Spaniard at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
He earlier beat another Spaniard, Adam Hermida, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, on his way to the quarterfinal round.
Tierro will next face Karunday Singh in the semifinal round on Saturday.
Tierro became the last Filipino standing in the singles tournament after Johnny Arcilla lost to Australia’s Andrew Whittington, 4-6, 2-6, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, partners Ruben Gonzalez of the Philippines and Sonchat Ratiwatana of Thailand made it to the men’s doubles finals after beating Assri Merzuki and Ivo Minar, 6-2, 6-2. – From a report by Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
