MANILA, Philippines – Interim World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero believes he has a God-given task when he takes on unbeaten American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4.
“When you believe, amazing things happen,” Guerrero said, as quoted by Boxing Scene. “I’m telling you all now that I am going to beat him.”
“I believe God does things for a reason. I believe He put me here to humble Floyd Mayweather, and it is going to happen,” he vowed.
Guerrero, a devout Christian, believes his faith will help him beat Mayweather, who has won 42 consecutive professional matches.
“It’s funny, because I’ve been talking to the media and telling them I’m going to beat Floyd. Now, it’s time to get out there and do it,” he said. “I’m ready.”
“A lot of people think I’m crazy, but I think you’re crazy for thinking that I’m crazy. Just look at my wife. She asked the Lord to heal her, and He did,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero’s wife, Casey, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2007. He vacated a featherweight title in 2010 to take care of her.
Guerrero eventually left the featherweight division, won a lightweight title, then won the vacant interim WBC welterweight title in July 2012.
