MANILA, Philippines – The Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) announced that the much anticipated rematch between mixed martial arts (MMA) rivals Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen will indeed push through.
UFC president Dana White said Silva and Sonnen will headline UFC 147, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 23.
"This will be the biggest sporting event of the year," said White in a statement.
"Bigger than the NFL, the NBA, you name it - UFC 147 will be the biggest. The whole world wants to see this fight between Silva and Sonnen. We are broadcast in over 150 countries in 22 languages in half a billion homes. Wherever those fans are, they are going to be watching this fight."
Brazil’s Silva, the UFC middleweight champion and MMA pound-for-pound king, nearly suffered an upset during his first meeting with the trash-talking Sonnen back in August 2010.
After being pummeled by Sonnen for four straight rounds, Silva pulled off a come-form-behind win by submitting his American rival with a triangle choke in the fifth.
Sonnen has never admitted the defeat and has repeatedly asked for a rematch.
The rematch did not materialize until two years later.
