MANILA, Philippines – The country's top boxers gathered at the Sofitel Tent on Tuesday night for the prestigious 14th Gabriel "Flash" Elorde Awards night.
Nonito "The Filipino Flash" was excited to receive his "Boxer of the Year Award." He was also handed a replica of Elorde’s championship belt.
“Everytime na may awards [night] sila, it always fall on my schedule so I was not able to attend. This time ang laban ko sa Macau and I'm here training in the Philippines, so it's good kasi makaka-attend na ko for the first time, and it's a great honor," he said.
Donaire will train at the Elorde Gym for his world championship fight against South African Simpiwe Vetyeka in May.
The Filipino Flash has recuperated from bone fractures he sustained in his last fight against Vic Darchinyan.
He said he is determined to snatch the WBA featherweight title from Vetyeka.
Also awarded as the Boxers of the Year were former world champion Merlito Sabillo, IBF junior flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero and WBO junior flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes.
The awards night also celebrated Elorde’s 79th birthday.
Elorde’s memorabilia, including his trophies, medals, boxing shorts, shoes and gloves were on display during the commemoration night. – Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
