MANILA, Philippines – The Cebuana Lhuiller Gems defeated the Jumbo Plastic Giants, 60-54, in the first game of a triple-header that kicked off the PBA D-League Foundation Cup Monday at the Arena in San Juan.

Alvin Padilla led Cebuana with 14 points as the Gems held off late rallies by the Giants to get off to a good start in the conference

The Gems led by as much as 10 points, 46-36, in the third quarter but Jumbo Plastic cut the lead to two points, 48-40, when Jeff Viernes and Michael Parala sparked an 8-0 blast.

Cebuana countered with another 8-0 run of their own to again hike the lead to 10 points. The Giants got to within four, 54-58, with a little over two minutes left, but did not score again.

“Last conference, we were a school-based team. This conference, all the guys are mostly veterans, so we ran the plays a little smoothly,” said Cebuana head coach Boycie Zamar in a report on the league website.

“But I thought we had a good start while they struggled early and that gave us the momentum,” he added.

Viernes, in his debut for Jumbo Plastic, fired a game-high 17 points, but no other player finished in double figures.

In another game, Boracay Rum mounted a second-half rally to beat Cagayan Valley, 79-69.

Chris Banchero led the way for 22 points, while Boracay’s reserves came through in the third quarter to bring the Waves back from a double-digit deficit.

“We got off to a slow start. Our shooting was kind of out of sync. But our defense picked up in the second half, and we got a lot of contributions from our reserves. I thought that was the key,” said Boracay coach Lawrence Chongson.

In the first game, Café France routed Derulo Accelero, 90-73, with five players scoring in double-digits.
