PBA: Solo leadership, perfect start in Meralco's mind ahead of TNT clash

MANILA — Meralco looks to take the solo lead in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup when the Bolts clash with the TNT KaTropa at Araneta Coliseum on Friday.

Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

In the 4:30 p.m. curtain raiser, NLEX and Mahindra are out to barge into the winning column after both teams suffered 2 straight setbacks.

Meralco is currently tied with idle Alaska atop the standings with 2-0 records, after successive wins by the Bolts over NLEX and Mahindra.

Bolts head coach Norman Black knows his crew will have a tough test against the KaTropa, who will bring in veteran NBA journeyman Lou Amundson as their new import. Amundson replaced Denzel Bowles after TNT let go of the former Star import due to “attitude problems.”

Black and the Bolts will again rely on defense, which helped them win two in a row.

Despite going all-Filipino against NLEX early in the fourth quarter, the Bolts unloaded 12 unanswered points to take control of the game. "Defensively, we've been pretty solid, so we have to continue to do that," Black said.

In the second game, NLEX coach Yeng Guiao said his team will have to find a way to prevent the end-game collapse it experienced against Merlaco.

"We were in the game for three quarters, we were playing good offensively and defensively, and then the usual thing happens. We collapse in the fourth quarter," Guiao said. "So we still have to find the cure for that."

Mahindra suffered the same fate against Rain Or Shine, when the Floodbuster forced overtime but eventually fell 99-95.
