MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles opened their campaign in the first conference of the Shakey’s V-League with a four-set victory against UAAP rivals Adamson Lady Falcons Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles, who recently won their first ever UAAP women’s volleyball title, leaned on veterans Alyssa Valdez and Amy Ahomiro and got a big lift from rookie Michelle Morente to beat Adamson, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, and 26-24.
Ateneo took control of the match with a 25-23 victory in the third set, with Ahomiro proving to be a major problem for the Lady Falcons. Ahomiro notched four service aces in the third frame alone, bringing Ateneo back from a 3-8 deficit, and also provided the set-winning kill.
Ateneo took a 22-19 lead in the fourth set after hitting errors by Adamson guest player Pacharee Sangmuang, but the Lady Falcons clawed back in the game thanks to veteran Shiela Pineda.
It was the Lady Eagles who reached match point first, 24-23, after blocking a Pineda attack, but Pineda quickly made up for her error with a kill to tie the game.
But the rookie Morente, playing in her first V-League game, put Ateneo at match point again with a through the block kill, before Ella De Jesus ended matters with a kill of her own, allowing the Lady Eagles to wrap up the victory in just a little under two hours.
Valdez continued her high-scoring ways with a team-high 23 points, while Ahomiro fired 16 points, including seven aces and four blocks. Morente also had 14 points.
Meanwhile, guest player Pau Soriano led Adamson with 19 points, while Sangmuang finished with 17 and Pineda scored 16 for the Lady Falcons.
