MANILA, Philippines – The Air21 Express will lean on new import Wesley Witherspoon as they take on the Meralco Bolts in the PBA Commissioners Cup Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Witherspoon will be replacing Herve Lamizana, who was not up to snuff in four games for Air21.
“We’re playing in an import-laced conference. Sabi ko nga kay Lamizana, you have to outplay the other imports or at least compete with them,” Air21 coach Franz Pumaren told the league website. [http://pba.inquirer.net/43194/witherspoon-debuts-as-express-face-bolts]
Lamizana averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds in leading the Express to a 2-2 record, good for a share of fourth to sixth places.
Pumaren is hoping to get more output on the offensive end from the 6-foot-9 Witherspoon, who will also have to deal with prolific Meralco import Brian Butch.
Butch and the Bolts are coming off a 68-91 loss against Talk 'N Text last Friday, which saw the import struggle in the second and fourth periods.
“I’ve got to be a little more productive for the whole game,” Butch admitted. “I play with so much energy, and people have realized that I’ve got to do that for the whole 48 minutes.”
“For the last couple of games, I’ve been able to do it. Unfortunately (against Talk 'N Text), I couldn’t. I’ve got to do a better job. We’ve got to do a better job as a team,” he added.
Game time is at 3 p.m.
