MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Beer weathered Barako Bull’s barrage in the second half to hack out a 106-100 win in the PBA Commissioner’ Cup on Saturday.
June Mar Fajardo, who is slowly recovering from an ankle injury, tallied his first double-double output in this conference by scoring 15 points and hauling 11 rebounds.
The Beermen also got 28 points from their import Kevin Jones and 19 from Marcio Lassiter.
San Miguel appeared headed for an easy win after leading by as much as 16 in the third quarter, but Barako Bull’s import Joshua Dollard started connecting his shots and started a run that saw the Energy Colas tie the game 84-all in the fourth canto. Mick Pennisi knocked in a trey that pushed Barako Bull ahead, 87-84.
San Miguel, however, recovered its bearings and unleashed a run of its own. Marcio Lassiter’s triple brought the lead back to the Beermen, 95-93, and they never looked back since.
“[Barako Bull is] a good basketball team. We knew it’s going to be a very hard game tonight and I think they’re a much better team than their record says,” San Miguel’s active consultant Todd Purves said in the league’s official website.
“They always complete and you just can’t put them away. They will continue to make shots, they will continue to fight. I’m not surprised they made a run but I’m pleased we were able to grind out the win,” he added.
Dollard finished the game with 46 points on 17-of-26 field goal shooting. He also had 15 rebounds for Barako Bull, which dropped to 1-4.
Pennisi had 16 points for the Energy Colas.
