MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Michael Farenas won via a second round stoppage against veteran fighter Hector Velasquez on Friday to take home the vacant WBC Asia Council Continental super featherweight title.
According to Ryan Songalia’s report to RingTV, Velasquez suffered a cut in the second round, which prompted referee Bruce McTavish to halt the bout.
The victory was later awarded to Farenas after two of the ringside judges ruled that the cut was caused by a punch and not a clash of heads.
The fight took place in at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Velazquez, who lost to Manny Pacquiao in 2005, dropped to his 21st defeat against 56 victories.
Farenas, on the other hand, improved his record to 38 wins and four defeats.
