MANILA, Philippines – The video of Barako Bull big man Mick Pennisi’s funny flop in their game against the Petron Blaze Boosters on Wednesday night has gone viral on the Internet.
In the second quarter of the game, Petron import Will McDonald threw the ball at Pennisi’s head in an act of frustration. After a brief interval, Pennisi comically dropped to the floor.
The referee proceeded to call a flagrant foul 2 penalty on McDonald, causing him to be ejected from the game. Barako Bull went on to win the contest, 94-80.
But Pennisi’s flop proved to be the highlight of the night, with foreign basketball blogs calling it one of the worst flops in the history of basketball.
Yahoo! Sports basketball blog Ball Don’t Lie said Pennisi challenged Chicago Bull center Omar Asik for “basketball’s best/worst flopper.”
“Mick Pennisi... dove as if he was under canon fire following a shot to the head from Will McDonald,” Kelly Dwyer wrote.
Dwyer said that McDonald was “rightfully” ejected from the game, “but Pennisi should be ejected from the game of basketball for the next 10-12 years.”
The video embedded in the Ball Don’t Lie article has over 78,000 views as of posting time.
Meanwhile, Lost Lettermen also got hold of the video, saying, “If you thought flopping in the NBA was bad, check how atrocious it is in the Philippines.”
“We don’t even want to know what Filipino soccer players do to get calls,” Lost Lettermen added.
Another basketball blog, Eye on Basketball of CBS Sports, called it “arguably the greatest flop in basketball history.”
“The ball-to-head slam is great, the delayed reaction is priceless and Pennisi’s sheer audacity sends the hilarity to the moon,” the blog added.
Pennisi scored 11 points in the contest including two-of-five from beyond the arc. In the process, became only the eighth player in PBA history to make 700 three-pointers in his career.
