MANILA, Philippines – Former Adamson Falcons coach Leo Austria has accepted an offer join Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) as one of its officials in the athletics division.
Ateneo athletic director Ricky Palou told Spin.ph's Reuben Terrado that Austria will oversee the university’s sports program.
“He will be handling the sports development program of my office. He will be looking at the different sports and sit down with the program head and coaches and see how we can improve it,” said Palou.
Ateneo tried to recruit Austria to fill in the coaching job left by Norman Black when the American coach left the Blue Eagles to coach Talk ‘N Text in the PBA.
“Matagal na namin siyang kausap, sabi niya lagi, 'I’ll think about it.' Eventually, tinanggap na niya,” said Palou.
After his exit from the Adamson Falcons, Austria joined Petron Blaze as one of its assistant coaches.
Austria was also the former coach of the San Miguel team that won the 2013 ASEAN Basketball League title.
His contract with the San Miguel group, however, was not extended following a coaching revamp that led to Biboy Ravanes’ appointment as head coach.
Palou made it clear that there is no immediate plans to appoint Austria as Ateneo head coach.
The Blue Eagles are currently being coached by Bo Perasol.
