Chess officials to grace Lingayen tournament

MANILA, Philippines – Two high-ranking officials of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) are set to attend the opening ceremonies of the final leg of the 2013 National Age Group Chess Championships.

NCFP chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and executive director Grand Master (GM) Jayson Gonzales will lead the opening of the tournament on March 23-26 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center in Lingayen.

The four-day chess event serves as a qualifying tournament for the upcoming 2013 ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand which will be held on June 8 to 17.

It is also a qualifying tournament for the 2013 Asian Youth Championships in Mashdad, Iran on June 20-27.

“The whole province of Pangasinan is ready for the hosting of this prestigious chess competition,” said Gonzales, who also serves as tournament director.

The event is open to all chess players 20 years old and below. It will divided into the following categories: 20-and-under, 16-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under, 10-and-under, and 8-and-under. There will be separate divisions for boys and girls.

The tournament is supported by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission to encourage the development of youth through sports.
