MANILA, Philippines – ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer is denying a report that claims a rematch has been set between WBO light-flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes and WBO minimumweight champion Moises Fuentes of Mexico.
Nietes and Fuentes battled to a draw last March 2 in Cebu City, with both fighters keeping their respective belts.
According to PhilBoxing’s Mike Angel Lopez, he has talked to Fuentes’ manager, Jorge Barrera, who claimed that the rematch will take place in Mexico this July.
Lopez said he was informed by Barrera that Mexico-based company Zanfer Promotions had given the go signal for the rematch.
But Aldeguer, in an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, said there was no truth to the report.
“I don’t know why (Barrera) made an announcement,” said Aldeguer, adding they have not yet talked about a rematch.
Aldeguer also said they are seeking a “bigger fight” for Nietes.
In a back-and-forth battle in the main event of Pinoy Pride 18, Nietes and Fuentes went toe-to-toe for 12 rounds. Two judges scored the fight 114-114, while the last judge, Danrex Tapdasan of the Philippines, had Nietes winning 115-113.
The bout ended in a majority draw, but Fuentes’ team criticized the decision, since there was a Filipino in the judges’ panel.
The Mexican’s handlers said they will request an “immediate rematch” from the WBO, but will want neutral judges for the second fight.
