MANILA, Philippines – The Petron Blaze Boosters are hopeful that new import Will McDonald will have a positive impact on their team when he debuts tonight against the Barako Bull Energy in the PBA Commissioners' Cup.
McDonald replaced Nick Fazekas, who led Petron to a 3-4 record before being placed in the injured reserve list.
"Nick understood the change," said San Miguel Corp. sports director Noli Eala in an interview with Joaquin Henson of the Philippine Star. "He told me he's been through that with Donnie Nelson."
Eala said Fazekas understood that he was not the problem.
"Unfortunately, injuries to the team necessitated the change, because we lost guys who could complement his defensive game," Eala added.
McDonald arrived in the country yesterday and immediately practiced with the Boosters in the afternoon.
According to Eala, the 32-year-old import impressed the Petron coaches immediately.
"He's very skilled, obviously quicker (than Fazekas), with a great body," Eala said.
"He has both power and finesse but more of power, good inside-outside game, very smart," added assistant coach Gee Abanilla.
McDonald never played in the NBA but has played in the Spanish and Chinese leagues.
The Boosters are currently tied with Air21 and Barako for a share of the fifth to seventh places in the league standings. Only the top six teams after the elimination round will move on to the Commissioners’ Cup playoffs.
