Paragua rules Candon open chess
MANILA, Philippines – Grand Master (GM) Mark Paragua scored 1.5 points in the last two rounds to emerge as the overall champion in the 2012 Mayor Allen Singson Cup (Candon City Chess Championships) at the Stern Mall Social Hall in San Nicolas, Candon City, Ilocos Sur last weekend.
Paragua defeated fellow GM Darwin Laylo of Marikina City in the sixth and penultimate round then halved the point with GM Oliver Barbosa of Taytay, Rizal in the seventh and final round.
He finished with six points on account of five wins and two draws in the seven-round tournament, which was organized by the Candon City Chess Club and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
Paragua opened his campaign in sizzling fashion, defeating Johnny Corrales of Cebu, National Master (NM) Alex Milagrosa of Tagbilaran, Bohol and Fide Master (FM) Adrin Ros Pacis of Mandaluyong Cityi n the first three rounds.
He drew with FM David Elorta of Makati City in the fourth round then crushed International Master (IM) Ronald Dableo of Manila in the fifth, and Laylo in the sixth before splitting the point with Barbosa in the final round.
Paragua was awarded the top prize of P15,000.
Five players – Elorta, Barbosa, Dableo, IM Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo and NM Nelson Villanueva of Bacolod City – shared second to sixth places with 5.5 points.
Sharing the limelight were McDominique Lagula of Far Eastern-FERN, Quezon City, who bagged the title in the 16-years-old and under category; and Daniel John Lemi of Vigan, who copped the crown in the 12-years-old ad under division.
Lagula and Lemi both tallied 6.5 points apiece. – By Marlon Bernardino
