CEBU -- Photos from Sun.Star Cebu showed a goalkeeper of Alcoy Football Club being attacked during a match at the 16th Aboitiz Football Cup.
Other pictures showed supporters of both teams joining the brawl.
The Cebu Football Association has released the results of its investigation into the incident.
The conflict began when the referee called a foul against Alcoy Football Club.
"It started out with a verbal confrontation… the referee intervened, tried to separate [the players] but both of them, the player of Alcoy managed the slip the sight of the referee and hit a player from Ateneo," said Atty. Julius Ceasar Entise, member of the Cebu Football Association (CFA) Disciplinary and Rules Committee.
The goalkeeper said he did not start the fight and was just trying to calm everyone when others ganged up on him.
The CFA suspended 9 players, 4 from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and 5 from Alcoy Football Club.
The coaches of both teams were also suspended.
"Coaches must encourage their players to treat their opponents with due respect," said Entise.
The family of the goalkeeper, who is a minor, plans to file a child abuse case against his attackers.
The CFA hopes the sanctions will send a strong message that unsportsmanlike behavior will not be condoned.
