Marquez will never get fair shake vs Pacquiao, trainer says
MANILA, Philippines – Juan Manuel Marquez will never get the judges' nod if he fights Manny Pacquiao for the 5th time, according to boxing trainer Naazim Richardson.
Richardson said Marquez knows Pacquiao’s number and won all of their 4 fights, despite the Filipino tallying 2 decision wins over the Mexican.
"I feel Marquez knows how to beat Pacquiao, I’ve always said that and I still stand with that. Marquez knows how to beat Pacquiao. Pacquiao is a special fighter too so he’ll avoid the knockout, but I think Marquez just knows how to beat Pacquiao," Naazim told "On The Ropes Boxing Radio."
However, he thinks the Filipino boxer will have the upper hand if Marquez approves a fifth bout.
Richardson, who coached Shane Mosley against Pacquiao, said the General Santos native has already learned from his knockout loss to Marquez, thus he will avoid getting hit by the Mexican’s right hand.
Richardson believes the judges will again decide the outcome of the fight if Marquez fails to get a knockout.
"I think that can happen to Marquez with a Pacquiao fight now. With the way he was flattened out, if Pacquiao’s just—that’s how I felt he won some of those other fights, his high activity, his hair shaking all over the place, him bouncing around and nothing is really happening,” he said.
“The commentators say, ‘Pacquiao lands again.' No he didn’t, but you look up and Pacquiao’s got a decision. In that sense, I wouldn’t like to see that happen to Marquez."
Boxing promoter Bob Arum said the winner of the Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley rematch will be pitted against the survivor of the Marquez-Mike Alvarado tiff, making the fifth Pacquiao-Marquez bout possible.
