MANILA - Air21 management has decided to replace import Herve Lamizana to boost the team’s campaign in the ongoing PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Air21 coach Franz Pumaren said in an interview with Snow Badua of Spin.ph that they have decided to let go of the Ivory Coast native for a more offense-oriented import.
"Yes, we have a new import coming in. Herve is a good player but I don't think he's the exact player we need right now," said Pumaren. "Sometimes the team needs somebody who can score, not just a force on the other end of the floor."
The Express tactician said they will be bringing in Wesley Witherspoon who is set to make his PBA debut against Meralco on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Witherspoon played for the New York Knicks in the 2013 NBA Summer League where he averaged 8 points and two rebounds per game.
Sheryl Reyes, Lamizana’s agent, said the import’s exit was a mutual decision between Air21 and Lamizana.
"It was a mutual decision of Herve and the team of him being released as he did not fit the system of coach Franz. The type of import he likes is a big-time scorer and as we know Lamizana is a silent assassin and a good defensive player," said Reyes.
"He is not sad (as his departure) opens an opportunity for him to go play in Puerto Rico. From here, he will go home to see his family and proceed to Puerto Rico," she added.
The Express had 2 wins and 2 losses with Lamizana, who normed 20 points per outing.
