Nobutatsu Suzuki celebrates following his unanimous decision win against Brock Larson.

MANILA, Philippines – Japanese striker Nobutatsu Suzuki became the first ONE welterweight champion by outclassing American wrestler Brock Larson at the main event of ONE FC: War of Nations in Kuala Lumpur Friday night.

After surviving a tense first round, Suzuki warded off Larson’s take-down attempts by landing strikes from a distance before a sold-out crowd at the Stadium Negara.

The judges eventually awarded the Japanese fighter a unanimous decision win.

Suzuki is likely to defend the title against former Bellator champion Ben Askren.

In the co-main event, Filipino fighter Kevin Belingon got outwitted by unbeaten Korean Dae Hwan Kim in the first round of their bantamweight bout.

Belingon appeared to have the upper hand in early exchanges, but Kim pounced on an ill-advised submission attempt by the Filipino, forcing Belingon to tap out.

Brazil’s Adriano Moraes showed off his grappling skills by submitting Yasuhiro Urushitani in the second round via a rear naked choke.

Before the tap out, Moraes caught the Japanese veteran with a well-timed flying knee in the first round.

Meanwhile, the anticipated rematch between female fighters Sherilyn Lim and Ann Osman got cancelled after Lim failed to make the straw weight limit.
