MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (GSP) is confident that his middleweight counterpart, Anderson “The Spider” Silva, will suffer a tremendous upset in his next title defense.
Silva is set to defend his middleweight title for the 11th time against top conteder Chris Weidman at UFC 162 on July 6.
In an interview with SportsNet, St-Pierre said Weidman is capable not only of beating Silva but of dominating him.
“My friend Chris Weidman, when I see him in training, I believe he’s going to beat Anderson Silva. I believe it’s a bad match-up for Anderson Silva – very bad,” St-Pierre said.
“Not only is he going to beat, I believe he’s going to finish Anderson Silva,” the Canadian superstar added. “I believe it’s not going to be too long, that fight. People will be shocked.”
St-Pierre further believes that Silva chose to fight Weidman now as the challenger is coming off a long lay-off due to injuries.
“Anderson Silva is smart because Chris Weidman, he came back from an injury, a long lay-off, so it’s the time to fight him right now,” St-Pierre said.
“It’s going to be the best time to fight Chris Weidman right now, so Chris needs to be sure. He needs to get very well-prepared for this fight,” he added.
Silva had originally been reluctant to face off against Weidman, instead preferring to challenge St-Pierre in a superfight between the two top pound-for-pound fighters in MMA.
But Silva eventually agreed to the fight, which will be his first title defense since beating Chael Sonnen in July 2012.
