Pacquiao told to jab more frequently vs Bradley
Boxing coach Freddie Roach is encouraging Manny Pacquiao to utilize the “bread and butter punch” of boxing when they deal with Timothy Bradley.
Roach said Pacquiao will have to use his jab, a boxing basic that he has recently neglected in favor of his more potent punches like the right hook and the left straight.
"I told Manny the other day, 'Manny, you have the best jab in the world and it drives me crazy that you don't use it,'" Roach said in Kevin Iole’s report to Yahoo! Sports.
Roach said the jab creates more openings which will set up Pacquiao to unleash his power punches, especially his powerful left straight.
"He can knock guys out with his jab,” the boxing trainer said of Pacquiao.
“It's fast, hard and quick and I've been telling him he needs to use it more. In sparring, I've been getting him to double, triple and even throw four at a time. It sets up his left hand well," he added.
Pacquiao is also working on improving his conditioning. He has rehired Justin Fortune, the same conditioning coach who helped him when he was just making a name in the US.
Fortune said Bradley always comes in tip-top shape whenever he fights so he wants to make sure that Pacquiao will be at the best shape in his life when the two fighters meet on April 12.
“I’ve got a job to do with Manny. He’s faced Bradley before. He knows what to do to win. It’s my job to get him in the best shape to make that win happen,” Fortune told Joaquin Henson of the Philippine Star.
