Rios warns Floyd: Maidana is no joke

Former world champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios believes his stablemate Marcos Maidana stands a chance of upsetting unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. even as he praised the American as the best in the world.

“Maidana’s got a chance, you know,” Rios told Hustle Boss. “He’s a mean machine, he comes to fight, and he doesn’t (mess) around.”

Rios noted that Maidana was also not given much of a chance against the erstwhile unbeaten Adrien Broner, whom many considered as a Mayweather protégé. Yet Maidana thoroughly demolished Broner when they fought last year.

“You saw what he did to Broner,” Rios said. “Everybody thought Broner was the next Floyd. If he can do that to Broner, maybe he can do that to Floyd.”

“Like I said, Maidana’s no joke. He’s a very strong guy, and he comes to fight.”

But Rios also acknowledged that Mayweather is an entirely different fighter than Broner.

“Floyd has always been different. He’s always been better than Broner. He’s always been a step higher. Broner tried to imitate Floyd,” he said. “Floyd is one of the best in the world. He does a great job, and like I said, he’s a full step ahead of everybody. He figures out your game plan, he throws you off.”

Still, he said Maidana’s power and straightforward style can give Mayweather fits.

“He’s a straightforward banger… I think he does the same thing that he did to Broner,” said Rios. “He (Maidana) has got power, you know.”

“But Floyd is a mastermind. He’s one of the best in the world. We’ll just see how it plays out,” he added. “Maidana’s not gonna take this fight lightly, and I know Floyd is not taking this fight lightly. It’s gonna be a great fight.”

Maidana and Mayweather face off on May 3 in Las Vegas.
