MANILA, Philippines – The Alaska Aces have acquired former PBA D-League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Vic Manuel from the Air 21 Express in exchange for Aldrech Ramos, the PBA team announced on Monday.
The PBA approved of the trade Monday afternoon.
“We grabbed the chance because opportunities like these, to get a talent like Vic, comes only once in a while,” Alaska head coach Luigi Trillo said in the team website. “He certainly brings a lot to the table. He’s big, strong, and runs like a gazelle. He can play multiple positions.”
Manuel, for his part, welcomed the challenge of playing for Alaska, the defending champions in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup.
“Alam ko meron siyang expectations, so malaking challenge di ito sa akin,” said Manuel. “Magkakaroon sigurado ng kaunting adjustment, but familiar na rin ako sa triangle offense dahil iyon ang ginamit namin sa Cebuana.”
Manuel won the PBA D-League MVP award while playing for the Cebuana Lhuiller Gems in the D-League under Trillo in 2012.
Trillo acknowledged that they had to let go of a promising player in Ramos, but feels that Manuel is the better fit for the team.
“We certainly had to give up a lot to get Vic. I just feel that Vic brings a lot to the table,” said Trillo. “He’s strong enough to defend against the bigs in the league.”
“Looking at it long term, the trade is also for Aldrech. I sat down with him over lunch last weekend and I thanked him for being a professional and for being such a coachable player,” he added.
