MANILA, Philippines – Ed Daquioag showed the way with 15 points as the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers got past the Jose Rizal University (JRU)-A Heavy Bombers, 61-53, in the quarter-finals of the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Cup last Saturday.
This enabled the Growling Tigers to advance to the semi-finals, along with the Lyceum Philippines University-A Pirates, the College of St. Benilde Blazers, and the University of Perpetual Help-A Altas.
UST survived two scary moments as the Heavy Bombers came close, but timely baskets from Louie Vigil and Karim Abdul allowed the Tigers to move out of reach on both occasions.
Vigil and Abdul scored 10 points each, and their crucial baskets allowed UST to stay in front after JRU threatened, 52-56, in the last 2:10, and 53-57 a minute later.
This put them in a semi-finals showdown with the CSB Blazers, which held off the Joma Adornado-led Ateneo Blue Eagles, 73-70.
The Blazers drew 17 points from Paolo Taha and 12 from Mark Romero to advance.
Taha scored the winning lay-up in the last 16.7 seconds for the Blazers, with his basket coming right after Ateneo’s Jerie Pingoy misfired on two triples.
Meanwhile, Abdulaziz Mbomiko struck with 24 points and Joseph Gabayni scored 14 for the Pirates, who outplayed the Mapua Cardinals, 80-73, and arranged a semis clash with the Altas.
Prince Eze and Juneric Baloria had 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the Altas outplayed the San Beda Red Lions, 72-62.
The winners in the semi-finals will advance to the championship game next Saturday.
