MANILA, Philippines – GlobalPort guard Terrence Romeo is the first to admit that his return to action for the Batang Pier left much to be desired.
The high-scoring guard made his return from a knee injury in GlobalPort's final game of the elimination round against Phoenix, scoring 20 points in a 100-104 loss. On Tuesday, he labored for 14 points as the Batang Pier were eliminated by Magnolia, 79-86, in the quarterfinals.
"Wala," said Romeo after the game. "Ang layo talaga. Wala pa talaga sa timing. Ang dami ko pang dapat habulin talaga."
He averaged 17 points in two games, but struggled to shoot and made only 38% of his shots. He was a combined 1-of-13 from beyond the arc against Phoenix and Magnolia, and was unable to draw fouls at his usual rate. Against the Hotshots, he also committed a killer turnover in the final seconds that doomed their hopes of a comeback.
"Para sa akin, medyo hindi ako gaanong nakatulong sa team kasi siguro dahil sa hindi ko pa nakukuha 'yung rhythm ko," Romeo admitted.
"At the same time, naninibago pa ako kasi ang tagal kong walang 5-on-5 eh. Eto pa lang 'yung second game ko sa PBA tapos mawawala na naman kasi na-out kami," he added.
Romeo knows he has plenty of work to do in the break between conferences in order to regain the form that made him one of the most feared guards in the PBA during the past few seasons.
"Hindi naman ako pwedeng bumalik next conference na ganito pa rin ako," said Romeo. "Hopefully maka-adjust ako, makapag-lose ng weight. At the same time, nag-iisip ako kung paano ko makukuha 'yung timing ko."
It is not just their Commissioner's Cup campaign that is weighing on Romeo's mind. He is also determined to earn his spot in the Gilas Pilipinas pool, and wants to represent the country in the upcoming FIBA 3x3 World Cup in June.
"May parating din na 3-on-3, at saka Gilas. Hopefully, makapag-try out ulit ako sa Gilas," said Romeo.
"So hindi naman pwede na ganito lang 'yung performance ko or kundisyon ko 'pag nagpunta ako doon, so 'yun ang kailangan kong paghandaan," he added.
