MANILA, Philippines – An NBA Asia executive believes the historic pre-season game between the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers that will be played at the Mall of Asia Arena this October will be a “national event.”
Though the Mall of Asia Arena can only accommodate around 20,000 people, NBA Asia vice president Scott Levy is confident majority of the Philippine population will tune in to watch the game.
“I think the majority of the people who will be watching this game will be watching it for free,” he said.
“This is gonna be a national event, and there will absolutely be a lot of people in the arena, but 90-plus million people, that’s our goal,” Levy added.
“Ninety-plus million people watching this game.”
The basketball-mad Filipino fans will get to see live NBA action for the first time on October 10 when the Pacers and the Rockets play at the MOA Arena.
When asked why they chose the Rockets and the Pacers, Levy said it was a “complicated process” but added he is confident the Filipinos will have no trouble recognizing the teams.
“We’re definitely looking forward to young and exciting teams that have lots of superstar players but also up-and-coming players... We know that the Filipino fans, with the depth of knowledge will know everybody that shows up,” he said.
At the end of the day, their goal is to provide a “memorable event” for Filipino fans who have waited years to watch live NBA action.
“We wanna deliver memorable moments, once in a lifetime experiences, and that’s our goal for bringing the game here,” Levy said.
